Car-Rental

From Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) or some City locations it’s very easy to get some affordable rental-car deals. Make sure you get the whole package including full insurance and make note that most rates on the Internet do not show insurance rates included in the price. Insurance would range between $10 and $20 a day extra. California Law allows you to add an extra driver to your rental agreement for no additional charge. However when the (additional) driver is younger then 25, most rental-car companies charge extra. Checkout our TravelDesk for more information on car-rental prices, locations and hot deals.

When renting a car you need to have a valid driver license and a credit card, furthermore you have to be over 21. You will get the best rates when booking in advance and make sure you do not book the smallest (economy) size available option. These small cars are not safe enough for exploring the cities enormous highway system.

Make sure you fill up your car before you start driving into the desert and take every opportunity you get to refill your tank, as it can sometimes take another 100 miles before the next gas station.

Also bring at least one gallon (3.8 liter) of water per person with you, just in case you get stuck in the desert waiting for help. Switch off your air conditioning driving up hill in the desert when temperatures are above 100F (35C) and make sure to monitor your car’s temperature meter.

It is usually allowed to take a right turn when the traffic light is still red. But make sure you stop and look around first before you turn, as other traffic may still come from the left. Also watch for traffic signs, as sometimes it will read: 'no turn on red'. Make sure you you come to a complete stop when you see a stop sign, as 'rolling stops' (driving slowly) will get you a huge ticket, when Police is around.

When you park, check all the traffic signs, as most US cities have strict street cleaning regulations in effect. On certain days between certain hours, parking will not be allowed on some parts, as these streets will be cleaned. And when it is street cleaning time and your car is parked there, the chance on getting a ticket is around 80%.

Driving a (rental) car definitely gives you the best opportunity to explore this city and region. It will add freedom, flexibility and comfort. And it’s really affordable in and around Los Angeles.
