San Francisco > Monterey and Carmel-By-The-Sea
You have at least four basic options now. Either you return home taking a flight from San Francisco International Airport or you take the fast way back to LA using the I-5 freeway (6 hours), the slower but more scenic 101 freeway (8 hours) or one of the most astonishing roads you will ever take, Highway 1, The Pacific Coast Highway. We would go for the last option (weather permitting, you could have a lot of fog and don’t see anything), but you could even combine a portion of Highway 1 with Highway 101. For example to get an impression of Monterey and Carmel-By-The-Sea. Two beautiful little towns along the pacific shore, some 110 miles (2 hours) south of downtown San Francisco.
From SF find your way to US-101 South toward SAN JOSE. Then merge onto CA-85 South toward CUPERTINO / SANTA CRUZ. Then merge onto CA-17 South toward SANTA CRUZ. And finally merge onto the CA-1 (Pacific Coast Highway) South toward WATSONVILLE / MONTEREY.

Monterey is described by its official visitors bureau as the greatest meeting of land and sea. Monterey County encompasses some of California's most stunning scenery while offering world-renowned Monterey Attractions and recreation. From the dramatic Big Sur coastline to romantic Carmel and Pebble Beach to historic Monterey and its diverse peninsula communities. A first-time trip to Monterey County should include such sites as the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row, Fisherman's Wharf, 17-Mile Drive, National Steinbeck Center, Elkhorn Slough and Monterey Wine Country.
Carmel
Since the turn of the century, Carmel-by-the-Sea has been a Mecca for artists, writers, actors and playwrights intent on creating an intellectual and cultural oasis. These Bohemian founders fought to maintain the outdoor mystic and small-town appeal of the community and their efforts are in evidence today. Today, Carmel draws visitors from all over the world who come here to experience its vacation and cultural opportunities. They are enchanted with the village's quaint architecture, meandering streets, secluded alleyways, and courtyards and arcades that house a multitude of art galleries, and innumerable antique shops, boutiques, small cafes and restaurants.
